SOAHS Student Commits Suicide in Manipal

MANIPAL: A 3rd year student at the School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS) was found hanging in his room at Aditi Parvah apartments on the afternoon of May 6. The student, whose name has been withheld upon request, was pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Sciences in Respiratory Theory.

Thimmappa Naik, Sub-Inspector of Police, Manipal Police Station, confirmed to The Manipal Journal about the nature of the suicide. “The body was found hanging at 4 pm by the deceased’s two roommates, following which the police were called. The student was back in the city on May 5, after a vacation at his native place in Kerala. Hours before the incident, he seemed to be in a good mood and asked his friends to bring lunch for him in the afternoon, but he was unresponsive to repeated knocks on his door later on”, he said, adding that the police were still investigating, and that it is difficult to speculate on the reason, as no suicide note was found at the scene.

Later in the evening, as news of the suicide spread, students of SOAHS gathered around the KMC Mortuary, near the EDU Building. They were later joined by officials from the college.

At the time of publishing, no FIR or complaint was filed at the police station. Police are awaiting details of the post-mortem.
