Shekhar, a student of the Electronics and Communication branch, was caught at his residence in Atmi Residency, behind Big Boss Restaurant and Bar on Sarlabettu Road in Manipal. At the time of the arrest, the police, who acted on an anonymous tip-off , caught him in possession of 1 cc each of the drugs Fortwin, Alprajoloven and the painkiller Nitrodiazam. The drugs are not available over-the-counter and need a medical prescription to be bought, which the apprehended did not have. The drugs cause stress release and the  is used medically to reduce the intoxiative effect of drugs and alcohol. But Anubhav Shekhar was on an overdose of this drug as well.

The detainee obtained information about these drugs and their effects from the internet and then illegally obtained them. He also confessed to being a charas peddler to many Manipal students.

The Udupi Police Inspector of the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) , G M Hegde said, “He was nabbed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and has not been granted bail. He is now seeking to push the High Court for intervention. But it is a common thing now. Students are abusing drugs, both medical and non-medical, too often these days. We hope to catch all those who meddle with them, and therefore deter others from taking to such habits.”
