Their mission was to deliver unbiased and honest news in Manipal. Something nobody else was doing. Their dream was realised in the form of The Manipal Journal (TMJ)…

And that is where the movie-ness ends but it became a great script in reality.

On the occasion of the third anniversary of TMJ, the five founders of the website walk down the memory lane. As is often said ‘the organisation outlives its founders’. Yet, TMJ continues to uphold the ideals and values that it was founded on.

Rags says: After a lot of ‘struggling to get tickets’ and ‘managing my busy schedule’, I watched Inception a few weeks back. That’s one good thing about having weekdays off instead of weekends, movie tickets are easier to get. And the central theme of this mind-blowing film – that of planting an alien idea into the minds of others – is just so bloody awesome, and reeks of power. But mental as it may sound for me to put it this way, Inception was not performed for the first time by Cobb – all of us, every single inspired person on earth – does it all the time.

And however small, TMJ was my Inception – an idea that was planted in the heads of other people. But I stop taking credit for anything else right there. For it was these people who then decided to believe in that idea and make it – treat it – as their own.

Cheers to three years of TMJ, to the countless people who have made this dream possible, who have adopted this baby and who will make it their own in the future. Cheers to three years of Rediscovering Manipal…

Rambo says: Ah what do I say, things move so fast in the professional life that sometimes you don’t understand where you are going or what you are doing. Memories fade away quickly, but there is a Manipal time marker with TMJ. It is something which I will remember forever. TMJ is one of the first passions in journalism, and I would say I started out as a reporter in TMJ and owe it all to the mistakes and the good stuff I have done with the team there. This is something all of us can be proud of without hesitation, and should live on forever.

Ballsy Byatch says: Looking back to where it all began -the thing that stands out most is how ready the four of us were to make TMJ happen, when Raga suggested it. The important takeaway is that ‘the first step’ is what always stays with you; and TMJ has time and again proved to be that solid and fun platform! Not just for the five of us, but for our entire team and the teams that followed in later years. Guys, cherish the place that Manipal is: the kind of stories that can be generated and easy access to officials makes it (in some ways) a media boon. Something that I’ve learnt after leaving the place. I must tell you that three years later, I miss working with all my friends. So, make the most TMJ; make mistakes and learn from them. Make memories that will last a lifetime. And for the new team: tons of luck and love; Gear up, because it is going to be one helluva ride. Happy Birthday TMJ!

Shimzy says: There are so many memories that are associated with the way TMJ began and how it evolved to what it is today. The countless meetings the five of us had, to the blue and black website that we had originally, to the presentations that the five of us gave, the teaser we made for Rediscovering Manipal, the many arguments we had along the way, and much more…

I think TMJ was one thing that we all looked forward to, it was something that was constantly on our minds whether it was a possibility of a story idea or a link up to an event as their media sponsors. I think I can speak for the others when I say that when we started this, I don’t think we ever thought it would continue to run with this much dedication and hard work put into it, especially by the new people who we, as founders, haven’t even met. I hope TMJ will continue for a long time to come and get bigger and better in the years to come. Miss working with all of you…

Graphicathaley says: It all started at a small room in MIC, where five crazy people made a small plan, it seemed very small then. I was called Graphicathaley, among other names for the other four, to hide our identity, until we realised it was quite juvenile. The kind of stories TMJ started off with were never seen, and the boldness with which it reported some of the burning issues, made me a confident person, ideologically. The confidence which TMJ gave me, is something which I would carry all my life. It is an activity I used to look forward to every second of my life in Manipal. I hope all the people associated with it still enjoy the same family-ness which me and the other four did. I miss TMJ!

Thank you to all others who have been part of this website sometime, somewhere, somehow. Happy 3!
