Udupi: Thousands of devotees thronged the premises of Udupi Sri Krishna Temple from August 14 to 23. The Vittal Pindi procession on August 23 was the culmination of ten days of competitions, musical performances, dance dramas and poojas. The place was filled with activity with Huliveshas performing, men dressed as yadavas(devotees worshipping Krishna as a hero) breaking earthen pots filled with milk, butter and curds and the renowned percussionist Sivamani playing the drums. The priests started the procession on a chariot around Car Street distributing fruits, caps and silver coins, and thousands of devotees gathered to grab them. Little children and students tailed the procession, comparing their collections. The procession ended with the immersion of the idol in the Madhwa Sarovara, the pond on the temple premises.
