DOC hosts district-level badminton tournament2 min read
Manipal:The Zaphyr Committee of the Department of Commerce (DOC), Manipal University (MU), organised a three day district-level badminton tournament from August 25 called at the Recreational Club of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT).
The event, entitled ‘Crazy Racquets’ was inaugurated by Dr. Indira Bairy, Student Affairs Director, MU;Dr. H B Kempraj, Sports Co- ordinator, MU; Sandeep S Shenoy Head of DOC and Guruprasad Rao, Tournament and Faculty Co-ordinator, DOC. The event witnessed good participation from colleges and schools from the nearby districts, namely – Alva’s College, Mangalore, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi and institutes from Manipal like St. Mary’sSchool, Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences (MCOAHS), MIT and DOC. “We have seen a good turnout this year, this is a screening for the state level Inter-College Badminton Tournament in October”, said Dr. Kempraj.
On the first day the Under-16 Boys’ and Women’s Singles eventes were held while the second day saw the Under-19 Boys’ and Men’s singles and Men’s doubles events. On the last day, the finals for all of these events were held with the closing ceremony.
The girls’ performances however, were considered below par.“It’s a big disappointment that the girls couldn’t match up to our expectations, there is a huge scope for improvement”, said Rao. “I wish more and more girls join sports, they should take an initiative to learn and ace in it”, added Dr. Kempraj. “Girls should come forward and take sports as a career, they should be given a chance to showcase their talents in the field of sports.They should be encouraged and supported like I was by my coach, family and friends”, said Ancilla Saldhana, the runners-up for Women’s singles from St. Mary’s School, Manipal.
“Compared to the last year, this time we have seen a very good response and a variety of events as well, we will probably be organising a National-Level tournament next semester”, said Shreyas Shetty, President, Zaphyr Committee.
