MIC holds annual athletics meet2 min read

Manipal: Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) held its annual athletics meet “MICSPRINT” at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) grounds on March 20.

Hosting general track and field events such as 100, 200and 400 metre (m) races, shot put, javelin throw, discus throw, long jump and high jump, the meet also featured off- beat events such as the tug of war, the fat race and a mini athletics cycle for the college staff.

The second year BA students won the overall championship rolling trophy, followed by the first year BA students as runners-up.

Nishara K.P, a first year BA student was awarded the individual championship trophy for women after winning the 100 m, 200 m, 400 m and long jump events. She was also conferred the title of fastest woman in MIC. “I didn’t train specifically for the events. But I do play other sports in the evening ,” she said. “I think that helped improve my stamina, which is why I could play all these games without being exhausted.” Manvendra Chauhan, a second year BA student bagged the individual championship trophy in the men’s category. Sabeeha Charania and Yasin Sahib, third year BA students were awarded the best outgoing sportspersons in the men and women’s category respectively.

The faculty athletics were held from 5 p.m. Shruthi Shetty, Assistant Professor won the 100 m race and Anupa Lewis, Assistant Professor won the shot put event. Ramesh and Santosh, non-teaching staff at the institute won the 100 m race and shot put respectively. A popular game ‘Bomb the Country’ was won by Dr. Padma Rani , Associate Professor.

“The first years were very good. They came in good numbers. They won the march past and they were runner ups for the overall championship,” said Dr.Kemparaj, Director of Physical Education at Manipal University (MU). “The girls’ team put up a good fight in the tug of war. I thought that compared to last year’s participation, this year’s overall turnout was not that good. I want everybody from the college to come out and enjoy this day, if not participate.”

Dr. M.V. Kamath, Honourary Director, MIC, declared the meet open. He was also present at the closing ceremony along with chief guest Alexander Chandy, Director of Public Relations, MU.
