Malpe: The Udupi Zilla Yuva Brahmana Parishad recently celebrated its silver jubilee, by organizing a food festival on April 8. The event was held in Malpe beach, starting at 3:00 pm, with an initial crowd of around 150 people.
The organizers managed their finances at the stalls via coupons. Customers could buy coupons worth Rs. 10 and Rs. 20 at the entrance. The walk-through had a variety of dishes that were prepared by the members of the Parishad. Traditional dishes like the pongal, bisibadi bath and pathrodi, had a huge crowd at their respective stalls. Other food items available were pundigatti, gundi, dosas, idiappam, miniskai, chutneys, halubai and kesari. Also available at the venue were juices of various flavors – banana, ippudla, mango, carrot and different rasainas.
The Parishad also conducted a few cultural events alongside the food fest. The events started at 5:45 pm, with devotional songs by Sudeer Kodavur and group. It was followed by dance performances by the members of the association
“All the volunteers and cooks at the venue are members of our association,” said Ranjan Karkula, the working President of the Parishad. He also said, “We have had help from others too, but it’s mostly about bringing everyone in our community together. We expect around 2000 people to turn up for this event.”
Lakshmi Raghu, a resident of Manipal said, “The stall is good, as is the variety of food available. But some of the items are a little overpriced”.
Mohan Upadyay, a resident of Udupi, as well as a member of the Parishad, spoke about the variety of dishes, he said, “A lot of the delicacies available here are quite rare. It’s difficult to find a few of these food items even in the most posh hotels. It’s good that we have a chance to share our culture.”
