KMC co-hosts workshop on Practical Pediatric Oncology2 min read
Manipal: Indian Academy of Pediatrics (pediatric-hematology-oncology chapter & Udupi branch) in a joint venture with Department of Pediatrics, Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal organised a south zone regional workshop on Practical Pediatric Oncology under the National Training Project at KMC, Manipal on August 25.
These workshops have being conducted for the past 16 years in the country; this is its first time in Manipal. The main objective of the workshop was to spread awareness to all the pediatricians about the curability of the cancer so as to ensure early referral and better treatment. There were in total 61 pediatricians present as delegates for the workshop.
“I have been practicing for the last four years and I have come across cases which are very rare, and very often we face a situation where such cases haven’t been handled with proper expertise. But through this workshop I learned a lot about such cases. It really helped us in understanding these complex cases in a better way,” said Dr. Sonia Bhatt, KMC, Manipal.
There were in total five speakers present for the workshop, for discussing the medical scenario of childhood cancer. Dr. Gauri Kapoor, Chief of Pediatrician Department, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, New Delhi and Dr. Leni Mathew, Chief of Pediatrician Department, Christian Medical College, Vellore were the outstation speakers. The speakers from the KMC, Manipal were Dr. Narendra Chaudhary, Senior Resident Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Anupama Borkar, Head of Pediatrics Hematology Oncology and Dr. Shamee Girish, faculty, Department of Pediatrics.
“It was a very good experience here with such skilled and talented people. It was interesting to know how today’s youth perceives childhood cancer and what better ideas they can empower in near future to make this place be a cancer free zone,” said Dr. Gauri Kapoor from Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital.
The chief guest for the function was Dr. K. Ramnarayan, Vice Chancellor, Manipal University. Dr. Pushpa Kini, Head of Department, Pediatric Centre, KMC, Manipal and Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Head of Department, Urology, KMC, Manipal and Deputy Medical Superintendent of the hospital were also present.
