Manipal: Manipal Institute of Management (MIM) held its annual ‘Management Conclave’ in an attempt to bridge the gap between academia and the management industry on September 13 at the AC seminar hall at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT).

Hosting an array of speakers from the various fields of the management industry, the assembly witnessed lectures by Vijay Nair, Senior General Manager, HR and Admin of Mahindra and Mahindra, Pune ; R. Hariharan, Regional Head of SBI Mutual Fund Private Ltd., Bangalore ; Abhinandan, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Narayan Hrudayalaya, Bangalore;  Dilip Sawant, Vice President of the  supply chain at Elder Pharmaceuticals, Mumbai and Arun Rao, General Manager of Warehousing and  3PL services, Mumbai.

The speakers at the event explained how, with over 3,000 Business schools in India producing trained graduates every year, there is an excess of people and only limited jobs. They went on to tell the MIM students that being in MIM gives them an advantage over the others since MIM has specialised courses that only few Business schools offer.

Explaining the idea behind the seminars, Ron John, a student coordinator of the event said, “What we are trying to do here is bring in all the aspects of management under one roof. These seminars are held each year to help us students understand how the industry we are about to get into works. There is a difference between book knowledge and real knowledge.” He further explained, “Say for example what we study in our books may not necessarily be how it is done in real and the speakers are the ones who tell us how the industry functions in reality, through their life experience.”

Zara Mascarenhas, a second year MBA student from MIM shared her experience at the event with TMJ. “There is no doubt that the whole thing was very informative, but for me personally I think it was too long but other than that I feel inspired because I want to get in to finance and the lecture by R. Hariharan was very exciting. He made mutual funds sound so fun,” she said.

The event was inaugurated by Vijay Nair and Dr. H. S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of Manipal University.
