Manipal: Dr. M. M. Pallam Raju, Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India, officially inaugurated Marena on March 26. An indoor sports arena of the university, Marena has been open since September 2010.
Following the inauguration was a formal function at Fortune Inn Valley View Hotel. Dr. K. Ramnarayan, Vice Chancellor of Manipal University (MU) delivered the welcome address and introduced the chief guest to the audience. Dr. Raju, himself a keen sportsperson said, “I’m grateful for being invited for the first time in Manipal. Marena is an incredible facility and I am hoping that it is well utilised.” He further added that it is the first time he’s witnessed a town in India that’s evolved around a university and complemented MU for creating a positive environment for quality education.
During the brief interaction session with the students and faculty of MU, Monika Dubey, a first year MA student at Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) questioned why the Ministry seems focussed on technical and management education, neglecting streams like social sciences and humanity in the process. Responding to the query, Dr. Raju said, “That is the mindset of the nation. It is very important to give equal thought to multi-disciplinary courses. Art and theatre should be brought in which opens the senses. But the most crucial part is to make it accessible to everyone.”
On being asked for the reason behind the delay in the official inauguration seeing the fact that Marena started around two years back, Alex Chandy, Director, Public Relations of MU said, “There is no specific reason behind it. It’s just that the officials wanted it to be made open to the public as soon as it got ready.”
The Chief Guest was felicitated with a small memento by Dr. Ranjan Pai, Trustee of Manipal Academy of Higher Education trust. Other dignitaries present at the function included Dr. H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of MU, Dr. M.V. Kamath, Honorary Director of MIC and Dr. Indira Bairy, Director of Student Affairs.
A state of the art indoor facility, Marena’s sport facilities are available across all university campuses. It has a spacious gymnasium, mini indoor football ground, tennis, badminton and squash courts, indoor cricket practice nets and jogging tracks, etc.
