Staff Utsav makes a comeback after five years2 min read
Manipal: Marking 60 years of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), the Cultural Co-ordination Committee (CCC) of Manipal University (MU) kicked off Diamond Utsav 2013 at KMC Greens. The four day fest was preceded by Staff Utsav on April 10 which made its comeback after five years, giving the faculty ‘a reason to celebrate.’
Citing lack of days to conduct the event as the reason for its discontinuation after 2008, the cultural secretary of the CCC, Dr Sreedhar Pai, said that he was glad it was happening again as it was “a chance for all the faculty of Manipal University to get together in the spirit of a little healthy competition.”
Judging by the crowds that turned up to watch the Variety Entertainment event, all of Manipal’s students were thrilled as well. As Monishaa Chandrasegaran, a third year student at KMC put it, “It was very sporting of our lecturers to join in with the festive spirit of Utsav. However, in addition to the current year’s events, I would have liked to have seen them perform in a fashion show as well.”
To test the culinary skills of the faculty, a cooking competition was organised in the afternoon at the manipal.edu building. The participants were allowed to bring the dishes pre-cooked from home, with the exception of instant food, and had three minutes of presentation time in front of the judges. This was followed by a flower arrangement competition at the same venue.
The Variety Entertainment program in the evening saw a plethora of performances including dances, skits and mimes put up by the faculty which had the crowd cheering enthusiastically for them. The faculty themselves were thrilled to be a part of Staff Utsav and all of them said that it was a nice break from their monotonous schedules.
The staff of manipal.edu who performed a skit on the evolution of MU was adjudged the winner of Variety Entertainment. Melaka-Manipal Medical College was placed second while KMC, Manipal came third.
Dr Nidhi Manaktala from Manipal College Of Dental Sciences Mangalore said, “I was happy as my HOD herself pushed us into participating. As a post graduate student in Manipal, I would be busy and didn’t have that much time to participate. So, when I got the chance to participate in Staff Utsav as a teacher, I didn’t want to let it go.”
