Manipal: Disha, T. A. Pai Managment Institute’s Human Resources (HR) conclave concluded on August 23 by Col. P. S. James, Area Chair Human Resource, TAPMI. Being the sixth edition, Disha 2014 upped in scale this year, inviting over 50 eminent leaders from across 18 different industries in comparison to last year where only 12 guests were invited. Due to this increase in scope, Disha was extended from a two day to a six day event.

Col. P. S. James, in his concluding speech brought out how such an event would help students joining the industry and inform the college about the industrial demands. He also mentioned how HR is the most complicated but the most crucial resource. At last he thanked all the members who had joined this event and making it a success.

This year’s theme for Disha 2014 was “The Talent Race in Emerging Economies – Will India Win?” It was inaugurated on August 18 by Chief Guest Mr. Rajat Jain, the Managing Director at Xerox India. A panel discussion ‘Onimia’ brought together six industries tycoons and students who gave their views on the theme of the event. The discussion brought in how the skill gap in India could be bridged as 64% employers faced difficulties due to either a lack of interest or lack of skills.

The second to the fifth days consisted of many different panel discussion on topics such as ‘Innovative Recruitment Strategies for Winning the Talent Race’, ‘Talent strategies – Balancing Build vs. Buy’, ‘Talent Management in a cross-cultural environment’ and ‘Managing Talent in the Transition Economy of India’. To make it even more student interactive, two events “We The People”, a debate competition, and a mock press conference for a company stuck in an ethical dilemma was held.
