Udupi: The Rotaract Club of Manipal visited the Shri Krishna old age home in Malpe on October 12 to spend some time with the residents, as a part of their Community Contact Program.

Suffering from a disease that has paralysed his legs, J Narayana Rao, an 83 year old recent resident of the home narrates his tale. ‘I have to live here with others of my age simply because my daughter-in-law could not tolerate my interference in household matters. At my son’s request, I have chosen to stay here, translating religious books from regional languages to English, so that more people can read them.’

Similar situations were faced by other members of the house, but instead of worrying about their diseases and problems, they enjoy their time together. Their caretaker Harikishan says, ‘They have very few visitors, with intervals of one to two months. But they seem to be living together happily, as a family.’ Their diet comprises of fruits and vegetables provided to them regularly from the local market. Regular visits from the doctor are also carried out.

It is s very interesting experience to hear the stories of the residents and spend some quality time with them. I truly enjoyed it,’ said Padmanayaki Chelikani, a student who volunteered for the visit.
