Udupi: Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations were held at the Mahatma Gandhi college ground in Udupi on October 31, to mark the day the state was officially formed in 1965.

During the celebrations, the state award or the ‘Rajyotsava Prashasti’ was given to those who are exceptional in the fields of art, social welfare, agriculture and others. Some of the winners included Mamatha Pujari, two time Asian Games gold medallist in Kabaddi and Veronica Kernel, a social activist. Several school children who have done exceptionally well were also awarded. The whole function was organised under the guidance of district in charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.

This was followed by a flag hoisting ceremony conducted by the Udupi district MLA Pramod Madhwaraj and Udupi Deputy Commissioner, S S Pattana Shetty, where both the Indian and Karnataka flags were hoisted. There was also a march-past by the scouts of various government schools in the district, and by the Udupi police troops and fire brigade.

Mannu Verma, a resident of Udupi and a spectator of the function said, ‘This is our state’s festival and I love the grand scale the celebrations have been conducted at, to match Karnataka’s dignity.’
