In what was a result of sheer hard work and determination of 24 years, Raghunath Manohar gave Manipal University much reason to be proud of him. His refurbished works on an invention called the Marking Gauge received a U.S. patent after almost four and a half years making him the single inventor of the device.
Working in Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) as the Deputy Engineer of the Advanced Material Testing Lab, his invention is a greater modification to the earlier marking tool which could not draw more than two parallel lines. His unique invention is a flexible marking tool for single and multiple parallel lines and vice versa, with variable depth of the scribing pins to suit the hardness of the material being marked. However, he is yet to receive an Indian patent on his invention, which has been under process since 2009.
“I am grateful for the help I received from Manipal University. It is one of the few universities in India to have an international tie up with Intellectual Ventures (I V), one of the top owners of U.S. patents,” he explained. For Raghunath Manohar, who joint MIT back in 1991, it is not the first time he has achieved a feat of this credibility. His work on microscopic and telescopic lenses is currently in use at the Indian Army Post in Bathinda, Punjab.
He also highlighted the delay in time when it comes to the processing and examination of Indian patents in comparison to the U.S.A. patents. “It took me just four and a half years to get the U.S.A. patent for my Marking Gauge. I had applied for the Indian patent back in 2009 and the work is still under process. There are plenty of inventions being made in India, but the processing system is sadly, very slow,” he opined.
For his invention of the Marking Gauge, his works on lenses, and other works like the compressive force based saw set, he has received almost up to $ 17,000 from Intellectual Ventures. He pocketed an additional $ 2,000 in appreciation of the high ratings received by him after examination for the Marking Gauge. As commercial means, he will receive 17% royalty from I V after his patents are bought.
He also stated that he never used the internet for ideas and drew the same from basic thinking. “I have faced rejections when the superiority of my inventions was put to question by foreign examiners. But I constantly kept thinking about the betterment of my inventions and finally gained the required patents. Rather than searching the internet for someone else’s ideas, we would be better off if we did the thinking on our own,” he elaborated.
He further said that he could never obtain a U.S.A. patent individually if not for the university, as it takes over Rupees 7 lakh to apply for one such patent. He concluded that Intellectual Ventures has spent over Rupees 15 lakh in helping his inventions receive recognitions and patents. With him receiving the U.S.A. patent, he is now the only engineer in Manipal University to have this feather on his hat. He is currently perfecting an invention of a device which helps mark the geometric centres of shafts, perfectly, without any limitations.
