Manipal: The Project Office, Manipal University has planned to set up a new girls’ hostel next to the New Ladies Block (NLB) for the students of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Department of Commerce (DOC) and School of Communication (SOC).

The construction of the new hostel is proposed to start sometime next month and the estimated time of completion is 18 to 24 months. With 6 floors in total, this building will have double sharing, fully furnished, AC rooms, with a space for a common TV room, housekeeping, laundro-mat and a capacity of 500 girls. “Unlike other girls’ blocks like 13th block and NLB, this hostel would not have a gymnasium, and the residents would have to go to Marena or the MIT recreation centre, as an alternative for the same”, stated an official from the Project Office, Manipal University.

Sundaram Architects based in Bangalore came up with the design for this new building and will be carrying out the on-site execution of the floor plan and the structure soon.

Demolition of a group of four non-functional hostel blocks named ‘K-Block’ has been happening behind Snack Point for months.  “They were tile-roofed and shabby, and lacked basic facilities for the students. This led to the closing down of K-Block by the university”, commented an official from the MIT Chief Warden’s office.
