Manipal: After a wait of two and a half years for justice, the verdict on the Manipal gang-rape case is finally out. The hearing was held today morning, October 15 at the District and Sessions Court of Udupi, where the accused Yogisha Poojary (30), Hariprasad Poojary (27) and Ananda (28), were charged guilty and convicted with life imprisonment. The MBBS student of Kasturba Medical College (KMC) was gang raped by the three men on June 21, 2013.
The charge sheet filed for the offenders was punishable under sections 376(D), 366, 506 and read with the section 34 of the Indian penal code. Along with life imprisonment the convicted have to pay a fine of Rs. 1 lakh each. Two other men Balachandra and Haringey, accused of destruction of evidence under section 201, were also found guilty and have thereby been charged with 3 years of rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 5000 fine.
‘’The verdict has been in the right prospect and it was what was expected of the system by all. It is a warning to the people to not indulge in such offenses. One good thing about this case was everything was in proper placement, the evidence clearly showed the guilty and their offenses. The medical evidence backed it up. The investigation department did a great job by investigating fast and precisely.” opined T.S Jithuri, Public Prosecutor.
On being asked to comment on the duration of the arrival of the verdict (almost 30 months) he said, ‘’the case has been travelling from the District Court to the High Court to the Supreme Court. As a case of national importance it was essential to investigate well, thereby it took time. It stayed with the Supreme Court for a while. But in the end, the proper judgement was passed’’.
