Manipal: Gowri Thampi, a student of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), who was found unconscious in her room in 13th Block, MIT Hostels on August 8, later died at Kasturba Hospital.

Campus patrol security officials were called at 10:30 pm when the victim did not respond to continuous knocking on the door by her roommate. The security officers knocked the door down and found the student lying on the bed. The police have begun investigating the incident.

Umesh, Station House Officer at Manipal Police Station, confirmed that a case of unnatural death has been registered. “We have sent a team to the hostel block to document the evidence in her room. Only after we receive a post-mortem report to confirm for any bruises or injuries, and take in statements, we will begin the investigation”, he said.

Security officers of Campus Patrol arrived first at the scene. An unnamed security officer said that the investigation is underway. “We will work with the police as they take the video evidence of her room and we will also be assisting them in the investigation procedure. However, it is too early to say anything. It does not look like a suicide but that of a death by natural causes,” he said.

The police and Campus Patrol security officers, along with university officials were seen in the 13th block, taking statements from the victim’s roommate and hostel caretakers a day after the incident.
