Udupi: District-level Independence Day celebrations were held in grand fervour at the newly inaugurated Mahatma Gandhi Bayulu Ranga Mandira in Udupi here on Monday.
The chief guest for the event Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, unfurled the tricolour in front of around 300 people. The national anthem was sung followed by a march-past by the students of various schools in the district. The weather seemed to favour the marching contingents, as it stayed sunny and warm during the event.
In his speech, Pramod Madhwaraj paid tribute to freedom fighters specifically mentioning B.R Ambedkar and Dr. Rajendra Prasad. ‘’The fight for freedom wasn’t only against the British, but also against divisions in our society. Dr. B.R Ambedkar’s campaign for Dalits is a good example,’’ he said during the speech. He also highlighted the activities of the Indian National Congress during the Independence movement.
The top scoring students of 10th standard and 12th standard of the academic year 2015-16 were felicitated before the programme concluded with cultural performances by the students of various schools in the district. The event was also attended by new Superintendent of Police, K.T Balakrishna.
