Manipal: Ishaan Aditya, a second year Instrumentation and Control student of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) was found hanging in his room (Hostel Block 9, Room 002) in the late hours of 13 August. He was declared dead by doctors at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) at 1:30 AM.
Speaking to The Manipal Journal, Gopalakrishna, Sub-Inspector of Police, Manipal Police Station confirmed that the student committed suicide and added that it appeared to be due to personal reasons. “His friends pushed and opened the door at 11:20 PM (13 August) and found him hanging. The security people came and after 20 minutes, they took him to the hospital for treatment”, he said. The police are awaiting the autopsy report while an investigation is underway.
Gopalakrishna Prabhu, Director, MIT expressed his regret regarding the unfortunate incident and added that he would assure the complete co-operation of the students and faculty members with the police. “I have made a small team of counsellors who will go to each class and talk about the general problems and solutions. There will be a contact number given and the students can contact them for certain problems, which can’t be discussed with parents or friends. In that way, the confidentiality will be maintained,” he said when asked about the steps the college administration was considering to counter this serious issue.
Plans to integrate counselling into the routine of students were already in place. “This is not the outcome of this incident but was already planned and will start next week,” added GK Prabhu. Meanwhile, the deceased student’s body was received by his family and has been taken to Bangalore, from where it will be taken to Ranchi via air.
