Formula Manipal returns to compete in Europe2 min read
Manipal: Formula Manipal is back in the game after a year, as the team entered international competitions with its season 2016 car, FMX6. The car competed at Formula Student Germany 2016 and Formula Student Czech Republic 2016.
Team Formula Manipal participated in Formula Student Czech Republic at Autodrom, Most, from August 2 to August 7 and at Formula Student Germany in Hockenheimring, Hockenheim, from August 9 to August 15. In an unfortunate turn of events, the car’s engine experienced trouble at the autocross heat in Formula Student Czech Republic. But the 21-member strong team managed to pull together and went on to compete in Formula Student Germany at Hockenheim.
While the engine setback prevented the team from competing in the endurance event at Czech Republic, it was a fuel leak spotted by the officials that lead to the team once again missing out on the endurance event in Germany. Formula Manipal team member Shreyas Pai admitted that the events in Europe were a learning curve for the team. “The presentations, the designs, the overall technical and managerial aspects of the competition and the competitors who took part in general, was an experience worth a lifetime. Making a more reliable car with a zero margin for error is the goal for the coming seasons and the lessons learnt in Europe are going to be instrumental for years to come,” he said.
The team does not essentially participate in wheel-to-wheel racing. They build a race car and compete in national and international level competitions that test the car’s abilities on a range of parameters. The FMX6 has numerous high-end improvements compared to the 2014 car and a 21-member team travelled to Europe to compete with their peers hailing from 23 countries all over the world.
The team is now safely back in Manipal and has started work on the next car guiding the junior team to make a more reliable car for the coming season. The FMX6 meanwhile has a 2 month long journey by sea ahead of it and once it returns to Manipal, it will be analysed and tested by the time the team goes to Formula Bharat.
