MANIPAL: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) celebrated 10 years of Marena Sports Complex on November 9. The Centre for Sports Science, Medicine and Research hosted Battledore, a Badminton tournament, which was held at the Marena Badminton court.
A total of 77 participants registered for the knockout style tournament. The tournament presented three categories – singles, doubles and mixed-doubles. The above 35 years category gained popularity in terms of participation, along with a strong crowd supporting the players. A genuine camaraderie was maintained between all the participants throughout the course of the tournament.
One of the main highlights of the event was the final of the above 35 years category. Gurumurti and Darshan fought hard in the knockout stages to finally meet in the final. The match looked evenly poised after the first game of the final round. Darshan won the first game 21-19, as Gurumurti looked to make a few adjustments for the next round. However, it was Gurumurti who made a splendid comeback in the next round, beating Darshan 21-6. The former made no mistake in the last game of the round as he made his way to a thumping victory. With ethereal drop shots and an accurate play, Gurumurti won the final game 21-13.
Shifra Fernandes, Faculty coordinator, Exercise and Sports Science department – the organising body, remarked, “Our objective was not only to celebrate the 10 years, but to also promote sports and physical wellness.” A total of 38 games were played on day one, while 12 games were scheduled for day two. All 50 games witnessed a marvellous display of badminton.
Battledore emerged as a successful tournament with participants from all over the campus. The competition has become a fan favourite, providing a platform for both staff and students to compete and play with fervour.
Marena, Manipal’s premier sports complex remains one of the best-equipped sports centres in the country, catering to the fitness regimen of students and staff.
