MANGALURU: A 28-year-old man attempted to murder a 21-year-old female college student by stabbing her 12 times with a knife at Bagambila, near Deralakatte, on Nitte Beeri Campus on June 28. Shortly after stabbing the girl, the man attempted suicide by slitting his throat with the same knife.

The accused was identified as Sushant and the victim was identified as Deeksha, a first-year MBA student at Nitte College, Karkala.

The girl was returning from college late afternoon this Friday when the man arrived on a bike and started to attack her. Students of the university and even locals were recording the attack, and video clips are doing the rounds on social media. The videos show the accused violently attacking the girl, while people close by shout at him, asking him to stop. The attacker also threatened to do worse if anyone intervened.

Reports say that the Sushant and Deeksha were in a relationship before some family problems got in the way. The girl later started ignoring Sushant which must have driven him to ultimately stab her. However, Police Inspector in charge of the case, K R Gopikrishna, told The Manipal Journal over a telephone conversation, “The investigation is going on and we can’t say what the reason was until the investigation report is out.”

The Police Sub Inspector (PSI) and the Ullal Police Station confirmed that both the attacker and victim are admitted at KS Hegde Medical College. The attacker’s condition is stable now but the victim is in a critical situation. Doctors say that the girl must be put on a 72-hour observation even though she was responding to treatment.

The FIR has been lodged at Ullal Police Station under an attempt to murder case.
