MANIPAL: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) hosted Kairos International Day 2019 on August 9 at Marena and Dr TMA Pai Auditorium, where students in Manipal from more than 50 nations represented their home countries.

Kairos is annually organised in collaboration with AIESEC, IAESTE, International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF), and Campus Ambassadors Manipal (CAM).

‘Carnival’, organised at Marena, provided a platform for students to interact and learn about each other’s culture and traditions. At the World Café in Marena, they discussed issues such as the increasing number of suicides among youngsters and the challenges that the LGBTQ+ community faces even after the decriminalisation of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

“Through Kairos, we bring the diversity in MAHE together because there are students from different nationalities here. So we try to bring them all together at one place and explain the importance of diversity to them,” said Pranshul Pratik, Campus Ambassador Manipal, on being asked about the importance Kairos holds.

Students from Bhutan, Vietnam, South Africa, Iraq, and Tibet shared the values of their respective countries by setting up stalls. A huge crowd gathered in front of the stall representing Iraq to taste ‘Baklava’, a traditional pastry from Iraq, which was an instant hit.

Another segment of the celebrations took place at the TMA Pai Auditorium. Processions were led by the students, who donned their traditional attires and placed the national flags of their countries on the world map. After an address by Dr Raghu Radhakrishnan, Director of International Affairs and Collaborations, Dr H Vinod Bhat, the Vice-Chancellor of MAHE inaugurated ‘Maestro’, an online portal through which all the exchange programs of Manipal would be made available. The inauguration was followed by an interactive session in which Dr Bhat answered questions put forth by the students.

The latter part of the evening brimmed with cultural performances such as music and dance sequences and a gymnastics showcase prepared by the international students. The day concluded with a fashion show.
