MALPE: The annual two-day Malpe Beach Utsav was organised by Udupi District Administration, in association with Department of Tourism, Malpe Development Committee, Department of Youth Services and Sports, and Udupi Nirmithi Kendra, between February 1 and 2 at Malpe beach. Different sports tournaments, activities such as kite show, dog show, cultural programmes and competitions for children were organised as a part of the Utsav.

Of the various on-going sub-events, the wine and the food festivals garnered a lot of visitors. People could taste different types of wine, know about the manufacturing process and purchase them at a much lower price than the MRP. “We come here every year and try to impart knowledge of wine to the customers; what wine actually is and also what benefits wine has on health,” said Hemant Natraj, Salesman, Sula Vineyard. He added that their sales amounted to approximately two lakh rupees in the two days of the fest.

The Kabaddi tournament took place on the first day, where 16 teams from Mangalore and Udupi participated. “Malpe Beach Utsav is the best platform to showcase the local talent of the region and we prepare for it the entire year,” said one of the participants at the tournament. The volleyball tournament for men and the throwball tournament for women took place on the second day. On the second day, several artists took part in making sand sculptures. Drawing competitions were held for students at primary school, secondary school and college levels. Water adventure sports like parasailing, zorbing, surfing and jet-skiing were among the crowd favourites.

The dog show organised on Sunday saw 74 dogs partaking. “We felt that the dog owners were reluctant to bring their dogs to the competition because the heat and humidity at the beach are not ideal for the dogs. So, from next year onwards we are planning to organise the show in the evening and we hope more dogs participate,” said Dr Harish Thamankar, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Udupi.

Cultural programmes were performed by several artists and teams on both days. Live music
performances were also delivered by SA RE GA MA PA and Zee Kannada artists.
