MANIPAL: The 74th Independence Day was celebrated by Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) outside the manipal.edu building, via a live webcast, on August 15. Owing to the present pandemic, the event was held with a limited number of dignitaries and invited guests.
Dr HS Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, hoisted the national flag. Following this, a felicitation ceremony took place where ‘COVID Warriors’ of MAHE were recognised for their continued and selfless service to the institution. Amongst those commended were doctors, nurses, drivers, paramedical and housekeeping staff .
The gathering was addressed by Lt. Gen (Dr) MD Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor, who spoke of the importance that this particular Independence Day held for the nation.“Today a new class of warriors has emerged, in India as well as in the other nations of the world,” he said, applauding doctors, nurses and hospital staff for their “sacrifice that is no less than that of the soldiers at our borders”.
Quoting the patriotic song Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo, he paid tribute to the sacrifices of freedom fighters and soldiers. “Swadharme Nidhanam Shreyah, meaning ‘it is great to die doing one’s duty’, is equally applicable to the service that all our soldiers and doctors have been doing without hesitation across many parts of this world, with diligent stride,” he added.
He emphasised the need for Indians to step up and do their bit for the nation in order to redirect and reclaim the “Vishwa Guru” tagline. “The vision of Dr TMA Pai – quality education and affordable healthcare, stands as the two basic metrics that contribute to nation-building today,” he said.
Dr Vinod Bhat, Executive Vice President of MAHE, and Dr PLNG Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Quality Assurance) also participated in the felicitation of the health workers. Precautionary safety measures such as social distancing and sanitisation were duly implemented.
