Kaup: Two young men from Bengaluru drowned at Kaup beach in Udupi on the evening of October 18. The deceased have been identified as Rupesh (23) and Karthik (21). Three other friends accompanying them were rescued.
The residents of Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru had reached Kaup on Sunday afternoon and visited the beach. Speaking to The Manipal Journal, Rajashekar Saganoor, Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) of Kaup, stated that they probably were caught in the rip current which was most likely caused due to the low tide that hit the beach that day. Additionally, he mentioned that the duo may have been unaware of the depth of the water and lost control.
Since it was a Sunday, the security staff present at the beach were comparatively less in number. As per the police report, it is noted that despite warnings by the guards, the five people ventured into the sea. Following a rescue operation, both bodies were recovered. The other three people were also rescued by the lifeguards.
A case has been registered at the Kaup police station, which has intimated the tourism department to take stock of the situation. “Rains have reduced and beaches are open for visitors as per Unlock 5 guidelines, but everyone needs to exercise caution and prioritise their own safety,” said the PSI.
