October 17 is observed as the International Day fo October 17 is observed as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty every year. In 2020, human poverty stands at a precarious place— 736 million people living in extreme poverty are at a higher risk of being exposed to the coronavirus with limited access to hand washing, healthcare and nutritious food. The setback caused due to the pandemic calls for extraordinary solidarity and collective action to get back on the trajectory to make social and environmental justice, and equity for all.

Congratulations and a warm welcome to the newest members of the team.
⁣On October 2, US President Donald Trump announc ⁣On October 2, US President Donald Trump announced that the First Lady, Melania Trump and he had tested positive for COVID-19, casting a spotlight on the pandemic which has killed over 213,000 people in the country. Following his announcement, multiple White House officials who had been in contact with the president also tested positive for the virus, including Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany and former presidential advisor Kellyanne Conway. The White House cluster now has over two dozen coronavirus cases, extending beyond Trump's inner circle as well.⠀
⠀
Although the president reported mild symptoms, he was admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center for three days and was discharged on October 5. He made an appearance for the cameras on the White House balcony where he was seen taking off his mask. On the same day, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new guidance which stated that COVID-19 can spread through virus lingering in the air, acknowledging concerns about airborne transmission of SARS-CoV2 virus. After his return to the administrative wing, he pushed for the resumption of election campaigning work and wanted to attend the next presidential debate in Ohio in-person, which has been formally called off by the organisers. A statement by the president's physician on Saturday said that he is no longer "a transmission risk to others", but the White House had no immediate comment on whether it meant that Trump had actually tested negative for the coronavirus.⠀
⠀
The US administration has received widespread criticism over the president’s continued downplaying of the global pandemic which has put the country in distress, and his lax approach to mask-wearing and social distancing. His handling of the crisis hit a record low net approval while he tweeted, “Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life."⠀

World Mental Health Day, a programme of the World World Mental Health Day, a programme of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFHM) is observed on October 10 every year to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world, erase social stigma and mobilise efforts in support of mental health. The year, 2020 has brought in many challenges and unprecedented changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Normal lives have been disrupted and the far-reaching consequences beyond the spread of the virus have affected people's morale. However, the effects of the pandemic were amplified for people living with mental health issues.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the need for mental health and psychosocial support will increase substantially in the coming months and years. Improvement in existing institutions through investment in mental health programmes at the national and international levels, has become the need of the hour. Thus, this year's theme set by the WFHM is 'Mental Health for All. Greater Investment - Greater Access'.

Recently, The Manipal Journal got in touch with the Student Support Centre, a psychotherapy facility for students in Manipal, to understand how institutions were working towards providing a safe space in the face of new challenges posed by the pandemic.

⁣In light of the gruesome case of sexual violenc ⁣In light of the gruesome case of sexual violence against a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, the All India Progressive Women's Association protested against this brutal incident and 'criminal misconduct of the police', at Mysore Circle, Bengaluru yesterday. The aim of the peaceful protest was to condemn caste atrocities and crimes against women, particularly those belonging to underprivileged castes.⠀
⠀
Speaking to The Manipal Journal, a protester said, “Women in this country are not at all safe and it’s even tougher for Dalit and minority women. We not only want the assaulters to be punished but also the police and the state for covering it up. Governments change but caste atrocities never stop. The upper caste has always been ignorant and has never acknowledged casteism. The movement against caste will work only if privileges are checked and everyone joins in.”⠀
⠀
The rising number of sexual violence cases in Uttar Pradesh and the practice of stringent, regressive casteism has sparked outrage and debates across the country about women safety and the still pervasive existence of casteism in India.⠀

A photo series, Manipal and COVID-19 explores how the pandemic, consequent lockdowns and aftermath have affected the people of Manipal.⠀
⠀
Sanjeeva Poojary, an auto rickshaw driver from the Tiger Circle stand spoke to The Manipal Journal: ⠀
⠀
“I appreciate that there was a lockdown, but it has been hard on us, the working class. Not many passengers board rickshaws or buses these days, even as the lockdowns have concluded. Only if people happen to come to town to visit hospitals and board our rickshaws will we get to earn our daily wages. People have become cautious because of the lockdown, but it doesn’t look like the disease will go away anytime soon. We manage to earn up to Rs 100 to Rs 150 everyday. That gets spent in the evening when we buy necessities for our homes. We need money to maintain our vehicles. We also have to pay our childrens’ school fees. Through the Seva Sindhu initiative of the Karnataka government, I was given a relief amount of Rs 5,000. A lot of people are yet to receive this, but it's simply not enough. Each of us have at least four mouths to feed in our homes. Each of us have a loan of some kind in our names. Soon the banks will expect us to continue paying our loans. We aren’t aware of any subsidies on the loan interest too. This isn’t just my concern - I know that a lot of my fellow rickshaw drivers are facing the same ordeal. If the situation continues to be this way, they may succumb to their frustrations and even take to the noose. We don’t know what will happen in the future.”⠀

⁣⁣Commentary:⠀ ⠀ Even though a substantial ⁣⁣Commentary:⠀
⠀
Even though a substantial reduction in the Indian GDP was expected in the last financial quarter, the announcement of its steep fall by 23.9% came as unexpected and worrisome news. The worst affected were construction (contraction of nearly 50 percent), trades, hotels and other services (-47%), manufacturing (–39%), and mining (–23%). Given that these sectors have the largest percentage of employment in the country, these numbers also throw light on the urgent state of unemployment.⠀
⠀
The major financial firm Goldman Sachs also predicted a crunch in the GDP for this financial year by 14.8% and the firm Fitch Ratings increased their prediction for the contraction in FY21 from 5% to 10.5%. All these numbers point to an economy that is among the worst affected in the world due to the ongoing pandemic. The massive lockdown and poor follow-up by the government in taking action to rehabilitate economic activities have pointedly caused this drop. ⠀
⠀
Though Goldman Sachs predicts a rebound in the ongoing quarter with production and manufacture starting all across the country, the ever-increasing number of cases leading to the re-imposition of restrictions have lead to a shaky restart.⠀
