With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic still nowher With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic still nowhere close in sight, many citizens of the country continue to be hit hard financially due to businesses being down-sized or shut down. Schools and colleges are yet to physically open; most of them have proceeded to begin the new academic year through the online mode. These educational institutions have an obligation to pay their teaching and non-teaching staff salaries, and since money is short in all corners, many students and parents are unable to pay the entire fee amount. Many schools are choosing to not only charge the full fees but also hike it for the ongoing year, notwithstanding the multiple complaints registered against such decisions. In a blow to many parents and students, the Bombay High Court stayed a government resolution to bar educational institutions from charging fees at a hiked rate for the academic year 2020-21, after being approached by aggrieved educational trusts. In both Kerala and Rajasthan, the respective high courts rejected PILs that asked for no collection of fees during the lockdown period citing the difficulty faced by parents. But, some respite has also been provided — the Madras High Court, for example, directed all colleges and schools in Tamil Nadu to only collect 75% of the tuition fees. Many university students have also retaliated against the charging of full fees. Student unions in government universities such as Ranchi University and Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) have asked for concession in tuition fees; students of DSPMU even staged a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Students from Manipal University Jaipur and Manipal Institute of Communication, MAHE, have taken to Twitter to address the lack of fee concession despite the extraordinary circumstances. Demands, in all cases, mainly include a reduction or waiving off of the fees and the option to pay in instalments. As the coronavirus situation continues to deteriorate, students, teachers, parents and educational institutions continue to face this conundrum. As of July 20, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 24.3 lakh people have been affected and 85 people have died as a result of the floods. Even ecosystems and the wildlife have not been spared — 85 percent of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve remains submerged and at least 96 animals have died. ⠀ ⠀ In Barpeta, one of the worst-affected districts, farmers have lost their homes, fields and cattle. Instances have been shared, of evacuated citizens being crammed under sheets of tarpaulin with little opportunity to practice social distancing. There are added worries of the floods acting as an agent to worsen the COVID-19 pandemic, as masks and other PPE wash up from the swollen rivers. A relief package is yet to come from the central government, although it has been reported that PM Modi has spoken to CM Sarbananda Sonowal of Assam and assured all support. An amount of Rs 2 lakh has also been sanctioned from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of people who lost their lives due to the floods.⠀ ⠀ In spite of multiple efforts across the country by various NGOs and individuals to raise money for those affected, there is little awareness about the state’s dire situation.The general attitude of indifference and apathy towards Northeast India has contributed to the negligence in the state with respect to the floods. Despite facing heavy monsoons and flooding every year, there is little research and strategy being devised to prepare and minimise the damage caused. Moreover, thoughtless development along the banks of the Brahmaputra river has caused the flooding to become much worse over the years. ⁣In 2002, an IT engineer named Kwaja Yunus was a ⁣In 2002, an IT engineer named Kwaja Yunus was arrested by the Ghatkopar police under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. He was interrogated and claimed to have escaped custody by the police. But, his co-accused had a different story to tell in the POTA court - that the seven policemen involved stripped, assaulted and tortured him to death. His body wasn’t returned to his family. The others who were accused along with him were eventually let go off. Four of the policemen were suspended and their suspensions were revoked earlier this week, much to the disappointment of Yunus’s family. ⠀ ⠀ Police brutality has a long and hidden history in India with origins in the British era. The prejudice against minority communities that was moulded into police bias before independence continues to this day. A survey led by the National Campaign Against Torture (NCAT) revealed that 1,731 and 1,966 people died in 2018 and 2019 due to custodial torture (in police and judicial custodies), most of them coming from the lower strata of society. Violence has acted as the trademark of police action, time and again. In the recent horrific Tuticorin case, shop owners P Jeyaraj and Fenix were severely beaten and sexually assaulted by the police. In their efforts to escape indictments, the police personnel resorted to bullying and threatening the investigating judicial magistrate, going so far as obstructing evidence and escaping arrest. This kind of police behaviour is often written off as “stress” or an unfortunate slip in behaviour, but these rampant acts of brutality are worryingly pervasive and normalised.⠀ ⠀ As this case garners outrage and cries for justice across India, one must also take a step back and examine the broken system of policing that allows officers to be violent and petty, immune to accountability and the obligation to actually fulfil their duty of upholding the law and the rights of people. ⁣On this World Environment Day, we need to put a ⁣On this World Environment Day, we need to put a stop on the growing disharmony between humanity and the rest of the biosphere. The locust attacks in east Africa and the Indian subcontinent, the Australian bushfires early this year, the ongoing global pandemic and the Arctic oil spill that came to light very recently are all testimonies to a fundamental climate change concern that threatens life on Earth. Hosts of viruses in the animal world are being introduced to other species as biodiversity is mismanaged. It is estimated that 75 percent of all infections occurring in humans are zoonotic i.e., they spread from animals to humans. The SARS-CoV-2 virus is just another example for the fact that we sign our own death warrants by destroying biodiversity and the ecosystems formed by it.⠀ ⠀ With respect to the same pandemic, in the city of Wuhan, a new medical waste plant and 46 mobile treatment facilities were constructed to combat a six-fold increase in biomedical waste at the peak of the outbreak. In India, where we have faced difficulties in safe disposal of waste even before the pandemic, a new facet to the problem has arisen – the personal protection equipment (PPE) and other biomedical wastes are not disposed and treated properly. In late March, a heap of gowns, masks and syringes were found dumped in a landfill in Delhi. These kinds of landfills are hazardous to the land and air, and point towards an even bigger garbage disposal problem caused due to the pandemic.⠀ ⠀ Change is still possible. One prominent outcome of the pandemic has been that the biodiversity of many regions have had a chance to heal. Instances have been reported across the world – dolphins swimming in the waters of Venice, elephants and deer roaming on the streets of Indian cities and the air becoming less polluted due to the reduced factory hours. ⁣In an intense battle that ensued in Handwara, K ⁣In an intense battle that ensued in Handwara, Kashmir, five security personnel were martyred. The Indian Army said in a statement that a joint team consisting of army personnel and a J&K police officer were sent to Changimulla in Handwara, following a tip-off from intelligence which suggested that terrorists had taken civilians hostage. Their aim was to take out Haider, one of the top-brass men of the Laksher-e-Taiba terrorist organisation. Haider, along with another terrorist also perished in the firefight. The team managed to rescue the civilians before being martyred in the hours-long rescue operation that turned into a firefight. ⠀ ⠀ The deaths of these men are being seen as a great blow to morale among the armed forces, as tensions continue to escalate at the border. Only about a month ago, five commandos were killed along the Line of Control in Kashmir’s Keran sector, during an encounter with five terrorists who were also killed while trying to cross the border into India.⠀ ⠀ Punjab's Chief Minister Amarinder Singh announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of Late Naik Rajesh Kumar, who hailed from Mansa district in Punjab. In his tweet, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated, “They showed exemplary courage and made supreme sacrifice while serving the country. ⁣Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of ⁣Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and to uphold the true spirit of journalism. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the pursuit of stories.⠀ ⠀ A free Fourth Estate is the cornerstone of any democracy and it is imperative for governments across the world to respect and uphold the freedom of expression. This year, the World Press Freedom Index has ranked India at the 142nd position. Over 40 journalists have been killed in the line of duty and as many as 198 serious attacks have been carried out in the last five years. ⁣The International Labour Day is celebrated on M ⁣The International Labour Day is celebrated on May 1 as a grim yet important reminder of the Haymarket Affair, where labourers who protested for human rights were treated with silence, and then violence. The occasion calls for one to accept and respect the dignity of the working and middle classes, and their economic disposition which is a direct result of how the society is shaped around them.⠀ ⠀ This year's theme for International Workers' Day is “Coronavirus/Stop the pandemic”. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), nearly 1.6 billion informal economy workers have been left in the lurch and have suffered catastrophic financial losses due to the pandemic.⠀ ⠀ As the disease continues to bring the world to a grinding halt, the lives and livelihoods of workers have been suspended in uncertainty. These routine burden carriers have not been offered much relief from the government, adding on to their difficulties. Fifty years later, we celebrate Earth Day 2020, acknowledging the need for climate action at a time when humanity stands at crossroads. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The repercussions of climate change are seen and felt around the globe, including in Manipal. Today, this little town is overtaken by fastracked urbanisation, and in the process, little attention is being given to the sustainability of this modernisation. Deforestation is rampant in the area, and accountability, is little. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ No greater challenge poses a collective threat to the future of every earthling, like the climate emergency does. As Desmond Tutu said, “Twenty-five years ago, people could be excused for not knowing much, or doing much, about climate change. Today, we have no excuses.” ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Decades have been lost in denial and inaction.
