It happens to be the biggest and brightest of all three supermoons this year, with the moon being approximately 3,56,907 kilometres from Earth. The pink supermoon derives its moniker from the pink American spring wildflower named 'moss phlox'. Although the moon cannot physically change its colour, the pinkish tint appears due to external factors like atmospheric refraction, smoke and dust. Every year, on April 7, the World Health Day is ce Every year, on April 7, the World Health Day is celebrated to bring global awareness on health. The year 2020 has been named as the 'International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife' by the World Health Assembly. In line with this, the World Health Organisation has pledged to make a series of efforts to strengthen the nursing and midwifery workforce. Nurses and midwives make up nearly 50 percent of the global healthcare sector. Yet, they account for over 50 percent of the current shortage of health workers globally. On this day, they are amongst the first responders who are working in hazardous conditions, facing shortages of personal protection equipment kits and resisting the very real threat of contracting COVID-19. It is conspicuous that there would have been no prompt and concrete response to the ongoing pandemic, and to any other health emergency, public or personal for that matter, without the dutiful volunteership shown by the nursing community. Now, more than ever, there is a dire need for governments and institutions to make extensive socio-economic investments in nursing and midwifery safety, education, jobs and leadership. In the past few days, various instances of medical In the past few days, various instances of medical workers facing the brunt of public panic have surfaced. Despite stern warnings from officials, doctors have been ostracised and forcibly evicted by landlords and homeowners in cities like Delhi, Chennai and Noida, over fears that they can be the carriers of COVID-19. Recently, a female doctor was reported to have been assaulted and arrested by the police in Telangana, while she was on her way to the hospital for her shift. The ruthlessness and stigma doesn't just stop at medics alone. Airline staff, who had been working round-the-clock evacuating stranded citizens abroad and within India have also faced backlash and discrimination. A press statement by Air India regarding this issue read, "These vigilantes have conveniently forgotten that many a spouse, parent, sibling, child and near and dear one have been brought home safe and secure from affected countries, thanks to the heroic efforts of these Air India crew.” A sharp contrast may be noticed when one compares these cold-shoulder occurrences to the public cheering from March 22, when citizens across the country clapped, banged utensils, rang bells and blew conch-shells as a show of support towards the same frontliners. Almost seven long years after the world woke up to Almost seven long years after the world woke up to the horrific crime that was committed on a moving bus in Delhi, the four convicted- Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, and Mukesh Singh, were hanged yesterday at 5:30am in Tihar Jail. Over the last few months, the convicts had been relentlessly filing mercy pleas and review petitions at the apex level, and had managed to stall their executions at least three times at the eleventh hour. They were originally set to be hanged on January 22, but using the loopholes in the justice system, the execution was pushed by almost two months. The Nirbhaya case put the country under the spotlight and catapulted debates on the status of women's safety and the rape culture that has been plaguing India for long. Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) organised Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) organised the 17th edition of Namma Angadi ( @nammaangadi ), an exhibition-cum-sale that promotes products created by local artisans and craftsmen. 'Namma Angadi' is a marketing platform associated with 'Namma Bhoomi' and Concerned for Working Children(CWC), an NGO which gives former child labourers vocational training which helps them to preseve their local craft. The exhibition witnessed the sale of products ranging from handmade soaps and clothing items, to pots and eatables like pickles and Jaggery. The profit from which went to CWC entirely. The event also had a special Yakshagana performance on Choodamani and Lankadana, two adaptations from Ramayana. The second edition of Parisara Sammelana, organise The second edition of Parisara Sammelana, organised by National Environment Care Federation (NECF) took place in Tannirbhavi Tree Park, Kollur, on March 1. The conference had a big turnout, including Padma Shree awardees Tulsi Gowda and Sukhri Bommagowda. Environmental issues were discussed in a courtroom style, with human rights activist Ravindranath Shanbhag presiding as the judge. The programme highlighted tribal culture and problems that tribal communities in India are facing today. US President Donald Trump’s two-day maiden visit US President Donald Trump’s two-day maiden visit to India concluded yesterday, after an ostentatious tour at a total alleged cost of 85 crores INR. Post a houseful turnout at the ‘Namaste Trump’ programme for the inauguration of Motera Stadium, Trump tweeted the epitomical phrase, “We, the people,” that institutes the preambles of both the Indian and the US constitutions. He added, “[both America and India alike] honor, respect, trust, empower, and fight for the citizens we proudly serve!” Despite these grand statements that proclaim the unity the constitutions stand for, both countries continue to show increased levels of hate crimes—religious intolerance and racism respectively—currently running parallel to the much celebrated visit of the president. Not too far away from where Trump met with Indian diplomats, politicians and businessmen, the northeast area of the city of Delhi witnessed outbreaks of violence between CAA supporters and protestors. This mob violence claimed the lives of 24 and furthered intense communal unrest. Observing a similar narrative, since President Trump came into power in America, there has been a surge of racism to the point of mass shootings, creating fear in the minds of immigrants and people of colour across the country. Amidst this, both leaders still have partisans that turn a blind eye to the increasingly prevalent bigotry in their respective nations. “We, the people,” say men who, when in power, continue to let hate crimes exist and thrive.
